tir a mor chippy, llanrwst

Had our fish and chips last night. They've been doing gf for about 6 months but obviously kept it quiet!
The gf fish is cooked with the chips which I initially felt a bit uneasy about but they obviously know about cross contamination as the girl serving carefully washed the tongs before handling the gf fish. We caught them at their busiest time (about 8pm on a Friday night) but they were very pleasant and accommodating.
Highly recommended - shall be calling there again. It's on Denbigh Street, which, confusingly, is the road to Abergele.
.....
Llanrwst is only small but we got lost trying to find it! From B-y-C turn right in the centre of Llanrwst by the square (road to Abergele) - Tir a Mor is about 50y on LHS.
Also worth a go is Ty'n y Coed pub about 3 miles W of B-y-C, not been there for a year or so but they do all sorts of gf inc pasta and pizza.
Try this link:

Yr Hafod is good food but, how shall I put it, somewhat eccentric!…..

GUT FEELING Vale Street Denbeigh

Coeliacs in Wales
Posted by Chrissie too on 21/5/2008

While on my hols in Wales, I stumbled across a small shop on Vale Street, Denbeigh called 'GUT FEELING. The 'Hubby' is a coeliac so they know what we're looking for. They only opened up on 5th May 2008 and are trying really hard. One of the good things about them is, they are doing a mail order service so you can make up a decent order with out having to go all over to find your favourite foods. You can ring them on 01745 816862 and ask for details. They have a good range although I haven't tried their mail order service yet.

Boarding School in N Wales

My son attends Rydal Penrhos School in Colwyn Bay, North Wales, as a day boy. I know the school has a number of coeliac boarders and at least one coeliac teacher. We moved 80 miles to be able to send our son to this school as I did not want him to board at an early age, but wanted him to be at a school where his CD would be accomodated. I cannot recommend the school highly enough. There are wonderful school nurses and the catering staff are well informed. After having lots of time off at his previous school because of illness he has had two great years at Rydal. Check out the school web site or ring the admissions secretary, Jenny Marsdon.

... on our trip to Snowdonia, we did visit the Tir a Mor Fish and Chip shop and it was absolutely fabulous - it's no more than 15 miles from where you are staying and definitely worth a visit. Here are the details.

We went up Snowdon on the train last week, lovely trip right up to the new cafe etc at the top, do book well in advance to go on the train as they have very few vacancies on the trains, we went on the 11.30 train, the next one with spaces was at 5.30, we ate afterwards at The Royal Victoria Hotel, which is immediately accross the road from the train, again this was pre booked, they did Bill a lovely chicken dinner with his own gravy, so was well worth a visit. The address for the hotel is Royal Victoria Hotel, Llanberis, LL55 4TY, Telephone 08444119003...

Cardigan bay area Barmouth Aberystwyth

If you can get down to Aberystwyth there are several good health shops there, also a Morrisons with lots of GF supplies. The health shops are on Terrace Road near W H Smith and on Chalybeate Street, There's also one organic/health/alternative shop which also has a restaurant/cafe and they will try and cater for you if you have a chat with them - here's their website: http://www.treehousewales.co.uk/
There's a Somerfield with a few GF products. TESCO are building a store in Machynlleth but it's not there yet!

Hope the sun shines for you - Barmouth is lovely.

We went to New Quay earlier in the eyear but ate in the caravan rather than going out. There is a Tesco in Cardigan which I went to and also an Aldi.
I believe the Hungry Trout is able to cater for Gluten Free but didn't test this out. There is a girl who works at the Haven site in New Quay who told me this …

Hello from wet near Barmouth! Barmouth itself has a Coop with a "dry" goods Gf section but I haven't checked the sausage section but can do so if you want me to as I shall be going there at the end of the week. In Porthmadog there is a Lidl and Tesco, the latter do sell our free from sausages. As far as I know the nearest chippy is "Tir a Mor" in Llanrwst who do fantastic Gf fish and chips and a few other things on demand. Cadwalader's ice cream shops (numerous outlets but the nearest is Porthmadog, sell ice cream with GF cones). Also in Porthmadog High St, Cafe Rock do Gf chocolate brownies which are good. Pub in Harlech (opposite the Golf course on the main road called Branwen) mark the menu Gf but a bit pricey. Enjoy yourself whilst here.

DD has undoubtedly had her best holiday since dx, 5 years ago (she is nearly 10)

we went to porthmadog in north wales, stopping overnight on the way with friends near market bosworth - so we went to the batter of bosworth for GF fish and chips, great

in porthmadog we found that ALL the flavours of cadawallers ice cream parlour were GF and they had sign saying "GF cones available on request", great, DD usually has to make do with a wrapped lolly-type ice cream

we visited the Branwen pub in Harlech after someone said they could do Gf, sadly as with most places the kids menu was entirely NON GF, however, because they seemed to know what they were on about we felt safe having jacket potatoes cheese and beans

then on another day we had GF f&c again, at tir a mor in Llanwryst, again excellent

Cardigan Bay places to eat (and the mcflurry)

...

My daughter thoroughly enjoyed her delicious gluten-free ice-cream in Gluten free cones from Cadwallers in Criccieth (thanks Sian from North Wales!) I believe there are several Cadwallers in Wales, and I thought the ice-cream was delicious, loads of scrummy flavours to pick from.

We also found a really lovely cafe in Harlech that sells the most delicious GF food. One of the very helpful owners has Coeliacs so they are fully aware of contamination and as well as selling various GF yummy scones etc they also have GF sausages and fry thier perfect chips in a separate fryer making them ok to eat as well. The only problem was that after cleaning her plate (unusual) of her GF sausage, egg and chips my dd had no space left for a cake

- Weary Walkers Cafe, High Street, Harlech

Oh, and not specific to Cardigan Bay at all, but a very helpful person at McDonalds suggested a mint choc cornetto mcflurry (without any wafer bits added) for my green eyed daughter after double checking the mint choc sauce was GF. I had a sneaky taste and it was delicious.

Barnacles
7 Mostyn Street
Llandudno, Gwynedd LL30 2NL

I recently went to Llandudno to visit friends and went to Barnacles in Llandudno.
I've never been able to get proper fish and chips in a restaurant since I was diagnosed. But here I had gluten free fish and chips and it was great!!!
Also, my daughter is vegetarian and she was able to get a full roast dinner with quorn fillets and all the trimmings!
Definately recommmened! So nice to visit somewhere where there are alternative options available and the staff actually knew what they were talking about!

Also, when we were there the waitress told us that they had recently been voted best local fish and chop shop!

I went to llandudno for the day and had a lovely gluten free fish and chips in their restuarunt, they also do take away. They also do GF curry sauce and GF gravy. They made sure I had some white wine vinegar for my chips and all the staff and the service was really lovely, plus they do a decent pot of tea. I can see why they were voted best local fish and chip shop 2010

Fronlas Café in Newport, Pembrokeshire - what a gem! Family run, large selection of gluten free cakes including scones and Welsh cakes, they will also provide gluten free bread and pasta and will adapt any dish on their menu to be gf. Very friendly and well recommended.
